How to Write a Cover Letter That Actually Gets Read (No Copy-Paste!)
1. The “Hook”: Grab Their Attention Immediately
Most people start with: “I am writing to apply for…” Boring. Recruiters already know what you are applying for.
Instead, start with a story, a connection, or a strong belief. Show them you are a human, not a template.

The Formula
Bad: “I am applying for the Marketing Manager role.”
Good: “I have been following [Company Name]’s growth in East Africa for three years, and your recent campaign on [Topic] completely changed how I view digital marketing. Here is why I want to help you take it further…”
2. Don’t Just Repeat Your CV
Your Cover Letter is NOT a summary of your CV. It is a sales pitch. Your CV lists your past; your Cover Letter sells your future.
Connect the Dots
Pick one or two major achievements from your CV and explain how you did them. Show your problem-solving skills.
3. Speak Their Language (Keywords)
Read the job description carefully. What words do they use? If they say “Agile Methodology,” you use “Agile Methodology.” This helps you pass the ATS software and shows the recruiter you fit the culture.

4. The Call to Action (CTA)
End with confidence. Don’t just say “Thanks for reading.” Ask for the next step.
The Closing
Try this: “I would love to discuss how my experience in [Skill] can help [Company Name] reach its goals for 2026. Are you available for a brief chat next week?”
